I'm not at all surprised at his response. You touched his heart with your words.
We men go out everyday and fight a battle. We deal with a constant battle for respect. Every man we meet, and every day we see him, we have to establish and re-establish our respect level. It's exhausting. We have to perform on top of that, work, and get things done under pressure, no matter what nasty things people may say to us. Any improper response, or loss of respect, can result in us losing out respect, positions, power, promotions, and most of all our egos. The only relief we get is to come home, where it is safe.
All we want is to know the battle is worth it. If not to our children, at least to our wives (the one who we are fighting for). But we will never ask to be appreciated (it's just childish whining if we do), we want it to be offered. And that's what you did. You offered him respect. It touched his heart.
